Thermal Paper for Business Printing Applications

Thermal paper is a specialized printing medium designed for compatible thermal printers used in receipts, transactions and other business printing applications.

For commercial buyers, choosing the right thermal paper is about more than paper width. The roll must match the printer’s required width, roll diameter, core specification, thermal grade and printing requirements.

Office Papers Supply provides thermal-paper sourcing for businesses and commercial buyers looking to purchase paper products in wholesale or bulk quantities.

Whether you are supplying POS operations, managing business locations or purchasing thermal paper for recurring commercial use, send us your required specification and quantity so we can discuss the appropriate supply option.

What Is Thermal Paper?

This is a specially coated paper designed to produce an image when exposed to heat from a compatible thermal printhead.

Unlike conventional printing on standard office paper, direct thermal printing creates the image through a heat-sensitive coating. This makes thermal paper particularly useful where businesses need fast, roll-based printing without conventional ink or toner.

Thermal paper is widely used for transaction receipts and other applications including POS printing, ATM receipts, tickets, labels and information-terminal output, depending on the thermal grade and format selected.

The exact format required depends on the printer and application.

How Thermal Paper Works

In a direct thermal printer, a thermal printhead applies controlled heat to the heat-sensitive surface of the paper.

The heated areas develop an image, producing printed text, numbers, barcodes or graphics without requiring a conventional ink cartridge.

For businesses, this provides several operational advantages:

Fast receipt and transaction printing
Roll-based printing for compact equipment
No conventional ink cartridge required for direct thermal printing
Suitable for high-volume transaction environments
Clear output when the paper grade is correctly matched to the printer

Print performance depends on the thermal paper grade, printer settings, printhead condition and operating environment. Manufacturer documentation also shows that different thermal grades can have different sensitivity, density and durability characteristics.

Key Product Benefits

Clear Thermal Print Output

A correctly matched thermal paper grade can produce clear text, numbers, receipts and other printed information. Thermal manufacturers specify different grades according to sensitivity, image density and application requirements.

Fast Transaction Printing

Thermal printing is widely used in retail, hospitality, payment and other transaction environments where receipts and other records need to be produced quickly.

Convenient Roll Format

Roll media provides a practical format for compact receipt and POS printers. The correct roll dimensions must be selected for the individual printer.

Reduced Conventional Consumables

For direct thermal printing, the image is generated by heat-sensitive paper rather than conventional liquid ink or toner.

Application-Specific Grades

The paper is not a single universal grade. Manufacturers offer different grades for POS, ATM, tickets, labels and other applications, with different requirements for print sensitivity and image preservation.

Printer Compatibility

Check the Complete Roll Specification Before Ordering

The paper should never be selected by width alone.

Before placing a commercial order, confirm the following information from the printer manufacturer or existing roll:

Printer model
Paper width
Roll length
Maximum outside diameter
Core diameter
Core type
Winding direction
Thermal paper grade
Required print density
Application requirements

Printer specifications can differ significantly even between equipment using similar paper widths.

For example, Epson documentation specifies particular paper widths, roll diameters, core dimensions and thickness ranges for individual printer models.

Important: Office Papers Supply does not publicly specify a complete printer-model compatibility list for this generic Thermal Paper product. Confirm your printer requirements before ordering.

Thermal Paper Size Guide

The following are general industry examples, not confirmed Office Papers Supply stock specifications.

Width	Typical Application	What to Confirm
57–58 mm	Compact POS, payment terminals and mobile printers	Roll length, OD, core and printer model
80 mm	POS and receipt printers	Roll length, OD, core and printer model
Other widths	Application-specific equipment	Exact printer/media specification

Epson’s current POS portfolio, for example, includes printers supporting 58 mm and 80 mm paper widths, while individual printer models impose their own roll-diameter and core requirements.

These dimensions should not be interpreted as confirmation that Office Papers Supply stocks every listed size.

GSM, Caliper and Roll Length

GSM

GSM means grams per square metre and describes the paper’s basis weight.

Different thermal-paper grades can have different GSM values. For example, manufacturer POS ranges can span substantially different grammages depending on the intended application.

Office Papers Supply product GSM: Not specified — confirm with supplier.

Caliper

Caliper describes paper thickness, normally expressed in micrometres (µm) or mils.

Thickness affects the physical characteristics of the roll and must be considered when selecting media for specific equipment.

Office Papers Supply product caliper: Not specified — confirm with supplier.

Roll Length

Two rolls can have the same width but contain different amounts of paper.

When comparing quotations, consider:

Width + roll length + outside diameter + core + paper grade

rather than comparing width alone.

Outside Diameter

Outside diameter determines how large the finished roll is and can affect whether it fits inside a particular printer.

Core Diameter

The core must be suitable for the printer’s roll mechanism. Manufacturer specifications demonstrate that core dimensions can vary between printer models.

Thermal Coating & Print Performance

Thermal paper contains a heat-sensitive image-forming layer. Different grades are engineered for different levels of sensitivity, image density, durability and application performance.

Important considerations include:

Thermal Sensitivity

Sensitivity affects how readily the paper develops an image under the printer’s thermal conditions.

Image Density

Different grades can produce different maximum image densities and may require appropriate printer-density settings.

Printhead Interaction

The paper must be suitable for the printer’s thermal-printing system. Incorrect media or unsuitable settings can affect print quality.

Image Retention

Thermal-paper grades differ in image-preservation performance. Some commercial grades are specifically developed for applications requiring greater durability.

Office Papers Supply has not publicly specified a retention period for this Thermal Paper product. Do not publish a specific number without product documentation.

BPA, BPS & Phenol-Free

Chemical specifications should be treated as product-grade information, not as a generic characteristic of all thermal paper.

BPA-Free

BPA-free means the specified thermal grade does not contain bisphenol A within the applicable manufacturer’s definition and documentation.

BPS-Free

BPS-free addresses bisphenol S separately.

A paper being described as BPA-free does not automatically establish that it is BPS-free.

Phenol-Free

Phenol-free is a broader material specification concerning the thermal developer chemistry. It should be verified against the manufacturer’s documentation.

Koehler, for example, separately identifies BPA-free and phenol-free thermal grades in its POS portfolio.

Jujo Thermal likewise offers both non-BPA and non-phenol thermal-paper grades for POS and other applications.

For Commercial Buyers

If your market, customer or procurement specification requires:

BPA-free paper
BPS-free paper
Phenol-free paper
Specific chemical declarations
Regulatory documentation

request confirmation for the exact thermal-paper grade being quoted.

Office Papers Supply Thermal Paper BPA status: Not specified — confirm with supplier.

BPS status: Not specified — confirm with supplier.

Phenol status: Not specified — confirm with supplier.

Thermal Paper vs Standard Paper

Feature	Thermal Paper	Standard Paper
Printing method	Heat-sensitive thermal coating	Conventional ink, toner or impact printing depending on equipment
Ink/toner requirement	Direct thermal printing does not require conventional ink or toner	Usually requires an appropriate printing consumable
Typical applications	Receipts, POS, ATM, tickets, labels and compatible thermal applications	Documents, reports, forms, correspondence and general printing
Format	Frequently supplied as rolls	Commonly sheets, but rolls are also available
Printing equipment	Direct thermal printers	Laser, inkjet, impact and other compatible printers
Common business uses	Transactions, receipts and specialized thermal output	Office documents and general-purpose printing

The key distinction is the printing technology and media design, not simply the appearance of the paper.

Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer

Direct Thermal

Direct thermal printing uses heat directly on specially coated thermal media.

There is no conventional ink cartridge or thermal-transfer ribbon.

This technology is commonly used for receipts and other applications where direct thermal media is appropriate.

Thermal Transfer

Thermal-transfer printing uses a ribbon. Heat transfers the ribbon’s ink onto a compatible receiving material.

Thermal-transfer ribbon and direct thermal paper are therefore not interchangeable media.

Buyer Rule

Before ordering, identify whether your printer uses:

Direct thermal media

Thermal-transfer ribbon + compatible receiving media.

If you are unsure, provide the printer model to Office Papers Supply when requesting a quotation.

Thermal Paper vs Other Receipt Media

Media	Best For	Main Difference
Thermal Paper	Compatible thermal receipt/POS printers	Image is produced through heat-sensitive coating
Bond Paper	Impact printers and traditional roll-printing applications	Requires a conventional printing mechanism/consumable
Carbonless Paper	Multi-copy forms and transaction documents	Produces duplicate copies through pressure-sensitive layers
Thermal-Transfer Media	Printers using ribbon-based thermal transfer	Requires a thermal-transfer ribbon

The correct choice depends on the printer technology and the required output.
